Day 1
Course content subject to change as the dynamics of the group dictates!
- An introduction to energy work to bond the group
- An introduction to the characteristics of a man
- What is considered typical, why?
- What are the expectations of a man, by men? by women?
- How is a man portrayed in the media?
- Classical connotations (from religion etc) that shape and influence men’s behaviour towards women and other men
- Blurring lines over gender identity
- How do men behave at work and at home – wearing the mask
- All things to everybody and nothing to himself
- Is health considered important to a man – what are the reasons, as opposed to women?
- What are the influencing factors – from partners, parents, from siblings, from children?
- Why do men spend billions of pounds on cosmetic products but considerably less on healthcare?
- What happens to a man’s holistic health when he does not meet his strict expectations?
- How do we ‘train’ men to more effectively communicate their health needs? – does it start with male children not needing to ‘man up’?
- When we term ‘health’ how much emphasis, understanding and appreciation is given to mental/emotional health?
- Look at suicide rates for young men – 18-25. What is the reasoning?
- Looking at men as energetic beings for the first time possibly.
Practical/group work for Day 1 will involve:-
- Experiencing energy in its rawest form – explaining for the male mind
- Being intimate without the sexual connotation – the neutrality of the element of touch
- Working with the feet, seen as highly intimate (as well as erogenous) and creating discomfort for some men who are guarded against expressing intimacy
- Recalling through anecdote and testimony from the group on how men respond to touch
- Introduction to some relaxing techniques for mind and body
Day 2
- Understanding compassion and empathy from the male perspective – being the protector and provider without being over-emotional.
- The need for men to be in control
- Breaking through the defence barriers formed by emotional and mental abuse and bullying/ peer pressure/ societal pressures.
- What lies on the other side once you have broken through? Learning to feel ‘vulnerable’ and safe at the same time. Substitute the word for open and receptive.
- Issues around trust and opening up – men as sexual abuse victims
- Men’s health issues change as they get older – but they still fall into patterns.
- It’s not just about prostates and ED – hidden diseases caused by expectations and pressures.
- The andropause or viropause – the unacknowledged destroyer of relationships.
- The three ages of man – youth, middle age and older age – shifting timelines on where these start and end
- How do we get men into the clinic rooms?
- How do we get them out of our clinic rooms?!
- Sensing energy as a man as opposed to a woman – issues around intimacy, issues around having to explain and measure the world they live in – the intangibility of energy
- In tune with their bodies, seen as machines that need to work with a specific function in mind (the same for women)
Practical/group work for Day 2 will include:-
- Specific reflexology points to deal with a range of men’s health issues (to be determined prior to the start of the course but may be influenced by questioning)
- Feeling the flow – getting men to directly experience the energy flow
- Anxiety reflexes
- Reflexes for snoring, bladder issues and pelvic pain dysfunction
- The importance of diaphragmatic breathing – techniques
Reflexology for Men's Health will seek, in part, to redress the discrepancy in how men’s health is viewed by society at large and how men themselves value their health.
